For Native Americans, the Ipswich river was a vital source of food that they both gathered and farmed. It also provided transportation between deep forests in the winter and the river and the ocean in spring to fall.  Two Native American archaeology sites are documented in the vicinity of the Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary.  (Cultural History of IRWS)
